November Athlete of the Month
Congratulations to Judy Mauldin for being named the Athlete of the Month for the month of November. Judy always works hard, has a positive attitude, is consistently striving to get better, and never makes excuses. We are lucky to have her at our gym. Thank you Judy for making our gym a better place.
Please tell us about yourself. I turned 61 yrs. old this year. I have been married to my wonderful husband Larry for 36 years, and we have lived in Colorado for 26 years. We moved here from California. We have 2 awesome children, Lisa and Jake. They are both married, and we have 3 darling grandchildren between them. We have a plumbing business, Mel’s Plumbing and Heating Inc. I love God and people, and attend New Creation Church.
When did you become a member at Defiance West? I think January 2017
What made you join Defiance West and why do you do it now? I wanted to find a place to work out that would motivate me to work out. I was working out at home to DVD’s, and was getting bored, and opting not to work out more and more. Defiance West is right next door to our Plumbing business, and it always intrigued me. I do it now because I love that the workouts are different every day, and I have seen results.
What were your thoughts after your first workout? I was nervous because I didn’t know if I would be able to do the workouts. But after encouragement from Cory and Cierra, they made me feel like I could do it. They said I could scale if I needed to. That made me feel better.
What is your athletic background? My 3 siblings and I roller skated competitively growing up. I was on the swim team in High School. And I always seemed to join gyms, and find work out DVD’s to do at home throughout my life. And I still love to roller skate whenever I can.
What is your favorite movement or workout? Dead Lifts, and believe it or not, burpees!
What is your least favorite? Overhead Squats
What has been your favorite or proudest moment since joining? Being selected Athlete of the Month!
How has Defiance West changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness? I feel good about myself! I feel strong. I don’t feel like a yoyo dieter anymore after doing a couple Food Challenges. I am learning about eating better, and feel like I have a great support group of people who all have similar goals, and yet we all have different levels of abilities. That’s what amazes me, is that we can all work out together having different abilities. CrossFit always scared me because I thought it was too hard. But I love it!!
What are your fitness goals for this year? To do a pull up, or toes to bar. And to try to eat healthy 80% of the time.
What is something most people don’t know about you? I play violin at my Church. I love to draw and do calligraphy, but haven’t had much time to do it.
What advice would you give to people looking to get started at our gym? Try it, you’ll like it! It’s not what you think it is. Cory and Cierra are the nicest, most uplifting, knowledgeable coaches you could ask for. And they will help you get started no matter what level you are at. It is a very encouraging environment!
