January Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Jasilee Cook for being named the Athlete of the Month for January. Jasilee is as consistent as they come and is always trying to learn more. She continues to put in the work and the results are speaking for themselves. Thank you Jasilee for pushing us and making Defiance West a better place.

1. Please tell us about yourself.

I’m a pretty open book so there’s probably not much you don’t already know. I grew up in Texas and would love to end up back there one day, or anywhere warm. I married my amazing husband/high school sweetheart in 2013 and we now have two beautiful kiddos. I work in sales and absolutely love my job which gives me a lot of flexibility to be a mama and make it to the gym.

2. When did you become a member at Defiance West?

October 4, 2018

3. What made you join Defiance West and why do you do it now?

I was bored with the at home workouts I was doing before and needed something more challenging. I knew quite a few people who went to DW but Joslin Boe talked me into my first class and thankfully Cory didn’t let me ditch our first meeting.

4. What were your thoughts after your first workout?

Everyone was so warm and welcoming!

5. What is your athletic background?

I don’t remember a time as a child where I wasn’t playing a sport. As a child, it was all gymnastics and cheer. Then it turned to soccer as I got older, I even managed an indoor soccer arena in Austin, TX where I got paid to play!

6. What is your favorite movement or workout?

My strength is my lower body so naturally I love any squatting and deadlifting but I’m also finding enjoyment in things I’m not so good at; pull ups, rope climbs, snatching, ect. The little kid in me also really love jump roping.

7. What is your least favorite?

Running.

8. What has been your favorite or proudest moment since joining?

Does getting my husband to join the gym count? Cory once coached me into a deadlift at 225# which was very cool but most recently was either my first rope climb or strict pull up.

9. How has Defiance West changed your life, lifestyle, and level of fitness?

Cue the tears… DW has changed my life in so many positive ways. Most special to me is the friendships I’ve found here, literally some of the best people I know. For my lifestyle and level of fitness, I’ve always been pretty healthy and fit but to be able to lift some heavy-ish weights properly, changes your confidence levels so much. I have also loved dialing in my nutrition and learning/sharing recipes with others.

10. What are your fitness goals for this year?

I’m still determining this but at the top of my list is to embrace running and keep working on my pull ups. Also, my snatches have fallen apart recently so I want to spend some time focusing there.

11. What is something most people don’t know about you?

I have my cosmetology license. I’ve also never traveled outside the United States but it’s in the plans.

12. What advice would you give to people looking to get started at our gym?

Like everyone else, I would say to just start. I don’t think you’ll find a more welcoming environment, with members of all athletic levels and ages, everyone has a place here. I’m so thankful to have been welcomed here and I truly look forward to everyday I get to show up.
