November Athlete of the Month

Congratulations to Kathy York for being named the Athlete of the Month for November. She consistently works hard, constantly pushes her boundaries, and Kathy is an inspiration to us all, doing something that people think is only for 20 year old's.  Kathy does a great job adjusting workouts when appropriate and focuses on good technique.  We a lucky to have her at Defiance West.

1. Please tell us about yourself.

I love being a grandmother “Mimi” to my four grandchildren. I homeschool two of them two days a week. I really enjoy reading and studying and working in the ministry with my husband. And of course, gardening which I only consider myself to be a novice.

2. When did you become a member at Defiance West?

My first workout was in a new beginner’s class 2 years ago in the middle of September. I was so intimated but I told my son I would do it. My son had been into CrossFit for several years and was a trainer.

3. What made you join Defiance West and why do you do it now?

I give the credit to my son for convincing me that I had to something to combat the aging process and live a full life. I had worked on keeping in shape off and on and he was sure CrossFit was the best way. I do it now because he was right. I’ve learned so much and love having muscle and strength. One other thing; I don’t think about how old I am but just living and planning and doing things.

4. What were your thoughts after your first workout?

OMG so that’s what it takes to be in shape. I was amazed at the fitness level of everyone else and realized this was going to be something I needed to commit to. It’s kind of funny my grandkids used to ask me if there is a day I was not sore.

5. What is your athletic background?

I have biked a bit. Ran in a few 5K races and of course playing basketball with the grandkids in the backyard. I still can’t dribble very well but I can jump much better and can make a few shots from the free throw line.

6. What is your favorite movement or workout?

Definitely doing Deadlifts, it is not such a complicated move and challenges me to improve – more weight and keeping my form.
